Why I Became Interested in Gun Control and Firearms
A few members of my family, and several of my personal friends, have owned guns for as long as I can remember. However, for whatever reason, I was never really interested in them. I never really saw the need to have a weapon. The neighborhood where I grew up had occasional robberies and break-ins, but I don't remember many violent attacks of any sort.
It wasn't until a dog attacked my dog when I decided that maybe I did need protection.
As a single father of a young boy, I sometimes worry about the safety of my son, as I'm sure every parent does. A few years ago, a large pit bull somehow managed to find his way into my yard and attacked my dog, Max, which was minding his own business, in my yard. Now, the pit bull was a lot larger than my dog, and as you may or may not know, pit bulls are capable of locking their jaw, and it is nearly impossible to get them to let go of whatever, or whoever, it is they're biting. Well, this pit bull had his jaw locked around the neck of my dog. I love Max, so I quickly jumped in to attempt to get this beast away from my dog. The pit bull would not let go. I was forced to use violent force with a garden hoe, but not even that would separate the pit bull from my dog. His jaw was still around Max's neck, slowly choking him. After quite a long time, I finally managed to separate them. The pit bull was very badly injured, and my dog was as well.
After I finally got them separated, I called the police and told them what had happened. I also told them about my neighbor's kids playing out in their yards and how this pit bull could potentially hurt them. Max received veterinary help from a close friend, who luckily works at a veterinary clinic, and recovered. It took 8 hours for a cop to show up. I understand that maybe they had more important matters to attend to, BUT IT TOOK THEM 8 HOURS! On top of that, I was unable to find the owner of the pit bull, and when the cop DID show up, he did nothing but tell me that animal control would not show up until the following morning.
What really bothered me about this was that this could have very easily been my son instead of my dog. No parent wants their son or daughter, or even their pet, to have to go through something like that. There had to be something more efficient than a garden hoe to neutralize a threat such as this pit bull. This is when I first considered purchasing a gun.
I started asking close friends who owned guns about how to acquire one. I also began doing my own research on several laws in Texas regarding guns. I found it difficult to believe all the laws that existed, restricting owners from the basic human right to protect themselves.
